API Casing Wear Testing Standardization Group Changes Standard Casing Sample for Wear Tests
Casing sample change will need to be considered when evaluating hardband peformance test results
2010-09-13 15:36:12

The API Casing Wear Testing Standardization Group recently switched the standard casing sample used for hardband specimen testing from N-80 classification casing to T-95. The move was made to minimize the data scatter experienced with N-80 grade casing. Although N-80 casing was in wide use for many years in less critical wells, the industry has been making the shift to more durable materials such as L-80, T-95, C-95 and P-110 in recent years. Additionally, the API manufacturing specifications for hardness and chemistry for T-95 are more restrictive than some other grades. In order to yield more consisten test results, the API Casing Wear Testing Standardization Group chose T-95, closer to the average weight and grade of casing used in the field today. It is important to consider this change for anyone wanting to use Mohr Wear Test results to evaluate hardband product performance.
